01

Understand the source before changing it

Identify the central claim and any conditions attached to it. If you cannot explain the idea aloud, changing the words may hide a misunderstanding. Note what must remain: the actor, action, comparison, qualification, and any evidence.

Then write the idea in a structure that fits your own explanation. You might bring the main point forward or split a long sentence, provided the relationship between ideas stays intact.

02

Rephrase structure as well as vocabulary

Changing “important” to “significant” does little when the sentence still follows the source word for word. A more useful paraphrase makes deliberate choices about emphasis and sequence. Keep technical terms when a looser synonym would be inaccurate.

Compare the result with the original. Watch for stronger certainty, missing exceptions, reversed comparisons, or added conclusions. A fluent sentence can still misrepresent its source.

03

Keep paraphrasing distinct from summary and citation

A summary selects the main ideas and usually removes detail. A paraphrase can remain close to the source’s level of detail while using a different expression. Decide which task you need before revising.

When the idea comes from another person or publication, keep the attribution. Rewording does not turn a borrowed claim into independent evidence. For a difficult sentence that mainly needs easier language, use the simplification workflow instead.

A few useful answers.

How can I reword a sentence accurately?+

Identify its main idea, rewrite it without looking at each word, then compare both versions for missing or changed details.

Is a paraphrase automatically plagiarism-free?+

No. Attribution still matters, and wording that stays too close to a source may need more revision.

Should every technical term change?+

No. Keep established terms when they are the most accurate expression of the idea. Explain them if your reader needs help.
